BOCA RATON, Fla. – (Nov. 20, 2019) – For the second year in a row, the Florida Atlantic University volleyball team has had four players named to the Conference USA All-Conference Team, the league office announced Wednesday. Massiel Matos made the First Team, while Sigourney Kame, Sydney Nemtuda and Zuri Smith were each named to the Second Team.
It’s the second year in a row that Matos earned First Team recognition. She leads the team with 265 kills, a 2.98 kills per set average – which is good for 14th in the conference – and 32 service aces, which places fifth in the conference. She also has a team-high eight double-doubles.
Kame made the Second Team, and in the process, joined Lori Lombard (1997-2000) as the only players in program history to earn All-Conference honors for four straight years. Kame is averaging 2.46 kills per set and is hitting .274 so far this season. Her .276 career hitting percentage is seventh in school history.
An All-Freshman selection in 2017, Nemtuda made the second team this year. The junior leads the team in digs (289), and is second on the team in kills (264), kills per set (2.84) and service aces (27). She is one of only four players in the conference to average at least 2.7 kills and 3.0 digs per set.
Smith rounds out the trio of Owls on the Second Team. Smith averages 1.59 kills and 1.20 blocks per set while hitting .259 so far this year. She is the team leader in both solo blocks (24) and block assists (76), posted a career-high 10 total blocks against UAB, and has been named C-USA Defensive Player of the Week twice. Her 1.32 blocks per set in C-USA play is second in the league.
