Smith is Florida’s seventh overall selection into the Academic Hall of Fame. Smith is the fourth gymnast to join the Academic Hall of Fame and half of them are Gators. The CoSIDA Academic All-America Hall of Fame Class of 2021 will be recognized in a ceremony Wed., June 9 at 7 p.m., during CoSIDA’s virtual convention.
Ann Woods Smith as a Gator
Smith joined the Gator gymnastics team in the fall of 1979 season after competing at Clarion State her freshman year. In her senior season, Smith claimed the 1982 Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (AIAW) all-around, uneven bars and floor exercise national titles to lead Florida to the national AIAW team crown. She also competed at the first NCAA Gymnastics Championships in 1982, taking third in the vault final.
A seven-time All-American at UF, Smith was named recipient of the 1982 Broderick Award as the top collegiate female athlete in the sport of gymnastics. Her 20 Gator all-around victories still stands fifth on the Florida gymnastics career chart.
She was a 1982 NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship recipient. Smith graduated with honors from UF in 1982, receiving a bachelor’s degree in public relations. Smith received her master’s degree from UF in 1985.
In 2007, Woods Smith received a NCAA Silver Anniversary Award. The Silver Anniversary Award recognizes former student-athletes for going on to excel in their professions and lead distinguished lives 25 years after graduation.
After many years as a communications executive in the healthcare industry, Smith is currently the vice president of the health group for a global public relations firm. She is the 2021 Academic All-America Hall of Fame honorary inductee.
