This year’s matchup between the Gators and the Tigers will tentatively take place on Dec.12 inside Ben Hill Griffin Stadium.
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Saturday’s matchup between the Gators and the LSU Tigers has been postponed after the Florida Football team experienced an increase in positive COVID-19 cases among players, coaches, and staff, it was announced Wednesday. Additionally, all team activities have been paused indefinitely.
The Southeastern Conference’s annual cross-division matchup between the Gators and the Tigers will remain in Gainesville, and will tentatively take place Dec. 12.
The decision is consistent with the SEC’s COVID-19 guidance<https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=http-3A__a.espncdn.com_sec_media_2020_SEC-2520Task-2520Force-2520Recommendations-2520Fall.pdf&d=DwIFAg&c=sJ6xIWYx-zLMB3EPkvcnVg&r=o5LKAX7slotfFMyE71jI7L22NYBIi1-KbRGNSXudTPo&m=wHz8YtAwnR4JPRxb0jzOJXkZ1PfbaxTtS-h2qUiSZJo&s=0KV_CxxeLeYvVmRfaXSYsL9F0kdembKAMulZwGM4bo4&e= >, which highlights the league’s commitment to the health and safety of all student athletes, staff, campus communities, fans, and the general public.
“Among our scholarship players, we have 18 current positives. We have another three walk-ons who are positive, so a total of 21 current team members, and when you add in those who are quarantined through contact tracing as a result of those positives, in addition to a handful of players who are on the non-COVID injury list, it gives the Gators less than 50 scholarship players available currently,” Athletics Director Scott Stricklin said. “Fortunately, all those who are positive in this instance, including some coaches and some football staff, they seem to be either asymptomatic or only experiencing mild symptoms so that’s obviously a positive right now and hopefully they’ll continue to not have more severe symptoms.”
Tickets and parking purchased for the original Oct.17 date will remain valid for the rescheduled game, and ticket holders do not need to take further action. The Gators continue to work alongside the experts at UF Health to promote a culture of safety for the student-athletes, staff, and fans.
“As we have throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, we worked hand in hand with UF Health, the SEC and its Medical Guidance Task Force, along with campus officials to create the safest environment possible for the student-athletes, staff, and fans,” Stricklin said previously.
