BOCA RATON, Fla. – The Florida Atlantic football team has surpassed the midway point of the 2024 preseason. The team is slated to open the 2024 regular season on Friday, Aug. 30, at 7 p.m., but today, the Owls faced another opponent – the heat. With the early morning temperatures hovering in the high 80s, reaching lower 90s by mid-morning, and the feels-like temperature predicted to be above 110 degrees, the Owls moved through their workout in full pads.
QUOTABLE
Running Backs Coach Chris Perkins
On the RB room
“I have a good group of guys. This team is fortunate to have those guys in the room. These guys are hard workers, they bring their hardhat every day. They are very disciplined, and they pay attention to detail. Each of them has their own individual skillset that they bring that can help us. I’m pretty excited about this room, we have three or four guys that can really go and contribute.”On being versatile
“Our offense requires us to do a lot of things in the backfield. Like I tell the running backs, we’re an extension to the O-line in pass protection, an extension to the wideout group, and, of course, we have the job of running with the football. All of those guys possess those skillsets of catching the ball out of the backfield; they have decent hands, they are good route runners, and they can go win a one-on-one matchup with a weakside linebacker or weakside safety. That’s another element that all of those guys bring into the room.”
On the depth of the room
“[At the] running back position all over the country, you have to have good depth, and you have to have guys in there who have good skill sets. Like I just said, we’re an extension to two other positions on the field. Either we’re running with the football or [in] pass protection.”
Redshirt Sophomore RB Zuberi Mobley
On how he is feeling during camp
“Health-wise, I’m doing pretty good. Camp is one of those seasons where you’re going to get banged up, but when the season starts, I’ll be 100%.”
On the ‘twitch’ within the RB room
“We have a lot of depth. We all have different running styles and we can all help each other out throughout the season.”
On getting involved in the passing game
“It’s fun expanding your game, just finding ways to make the defense pay. Just making it hard for the defense out there.”
Redshirt Freshman RB Xavier Terrell
On how his game is progressing this fall
“I feel this fall I have really become more detailed in the run game, pass game, catching the ball out of the backfield, and getting my blocking better. My main thing is staying healthy, getting ready for the season, trying to make an impact, and doing as much as I can for the team.”
On taking care of his body
“At a young age, my Mom taught me that a good diet carries you a long way in life. I just try to stick to it because I know it’s going to better me in football, throughout life, when I get older, and everything.”
Redshirt Freshman RB Gemari Sands
On how the playbook has simplified in his second-year
“Last year, I came in the summer, so I wasn’t able to get those things that people got out of in the spring. It was real fast paced as soon as I came in and then a week later it was fall camp, so it was really hard to for me to go out and execute at a high confidence level. But this year, I had the spring and the offseason, so I stayed in my playbook. When I came out in the spring, I was able to play with high confidence and know my alignment and assignment.”
On pass catching
“As an elite back, you’ll have to do all three phases: run the ball, pass blocking, and catching out of the backfield. That’s just expanding my game.”
On the bond between the O-line and RB room
“It’s great to have that trust level when you’re pressing the hole, and you have that trust level to expect him to make that block. So, when you score, it’s all off the O-line because they make that push, and then we find that hole and use our talent.”
