BOCA RATON, Fla. – The Florida Atlantic University softball team split Thursday’s action in the FAU Strike Out Cancer Tournament. The Owls mercy ruled Jacksonville in game one by a 9-1 tally, before falling to No. 12 Kentucky 7-3. FAU now stands at 4-7 on the season.
Game one was highlighted by a six-run sixth inning which gave FAU the eight-run rule win. FAU held a 3-1 lead heading into the sixth yet blew the game open with six runs on three hits.
Lynn Gardner threw her fourth complete game in the circle and earned the win, improving to 2-2 on the season. Sara Berthiaume, Maya Amm and Sommer Baker each picked up two hits. Baker tallied a pair of RBI to lead the offensive charge.
In game two, FAU did not get a hit until the seventh inning. Myah Murray ended Stephanie Schoonover’s no-hit bid with a base hit to left field. FAU went on to score three runs in the inning. Riley Olson doubled the first run in, then Amm knocked in another with an RBI sacrifice fly. The final RBI came off the bat of Berthiaume.
- Berthiaume collected her fourth multi-hit game this year for FAU in game one. Her .387 batting average leads the team
- Baker went 2-3 with two RBI and a run scored in game one, while Amm was 2-2 with a pair of runs scored
- Zoey Jones worked three walks, in an 0-0 game against Kentucky
- Gabby Sacco pitched her first career complete game in the night cap. Sacco dropped to 2-2 this season and stands at a 4.14 ERA
- The nine runs in game one matches the season high for FAU
FAU is now 11 wins away from getting head coach Joan Joyce to 1,000 career wins.
The Owls continue the Strike Out Cancer Tournament tomorrow against Columbia at 4:30 and Michigan State at 6 p.m.
