DENTON, Tx. – The Florida Atlantic University softball team was eliminated in the Conference USA Tournament by WKU on Thursday by a 14-3 final score. FAU closes its season at 29-26. The 29 wins are the most since the 2018 season, and the conference tournament appearance is also the first since the 2018 campaign.
FAST WKU START DOWNS FAUThe Hilltoppers took a commanding lead early with five runs in the first and three more in the second to hop out to an 8-0 lead. The big blow in the third came off a three-run home run.
In the fourth inning, FAU tallied three runs. Kaitlyn Cunningham led off with a single to left, then Cammeo Presutti knocked a base hit to right field. Sara Berthiaume put the ball in play and reached on an error that allowed Cunningham to score. A few batters later, Holley Peluso drove in Berthiaume with a pinch hit RBI single.
Berthiaume finishes the season as FAU’s leading hitter at .384. A First-Team All-Conference honoree, Berthiaume also led FAU in RBI (34), doubles (10), triples (7) and tied with Zoey Jones for the team lead in home runs at four each.
Lynn Gardner took the loss in the circle to close the season with an 18-9 record. Gardner was an ace for the FAU staff with a 2.73 ERA, nine shutouts and 22 complete games to receieve Second Team All-C-USA recognition Gabby Sacco pitched the final 2.1 innings today and closed her freshman campaign with a 3.41 ERA.
