HOUSTON, Texas – The Florida Atlantic University baseball team defeated Rice by a score of 7-1 on Sunday to complete a three-game sweep.
QUOTABLE
Head Coach John McCormack
“We needed this. Sundays have been a little bit of a mystery at times. Burnham settled in, threw up some zeros and Josey was fantastic. It’s really good to get a sweep, especially on the road. The guys played fantastic.”
THE BEGINNING
Rice scored a run off FAU starter Tyler Burnham in the first inning but the visitors responded in the third. Jalen DeBose doubled and eventually scored on a wild pitch to tie the game. They would take the lead for good in the fourth. Caleb Pendleton launched a one-out solo home run to put the Owls up 2-1. Later in the frame, Gabriel Rincones, Jr. lined an RBI single up the middle to score another.
THE TURNING POINT
It was a 3-1 game until the sixth when the FAU offense broke it open. With the bases loaded, Nolan Schanuel singled to right field driving in two. A base hit from Steven Loden plated another run to put the Owls up 7-1.
THE FINISH
Just as he’s done the past two Sundays, Jacob Josey came on in relief of Burnham and shut the opposing bats down. Josey pitched the final five innings and didn’t allow a run.
THE ARMS
- Burnham came up just an inning shy of the requisite five to be credited with the win, but he was solid nonetheless. The lefty conceded just two hits and a run in four innings
- Josey allowed two hits and struck out eight. He walked just one and earned his fourth win of the season
THE BATS
- Loden and Schanuel each went 2-for-4 at the plate
- Schanuel and Rincones logged two RBI apiece
- DeBose, Pendleton, and Armando Albert scored two runs each
WHAT’S NEXT
The Owls will return home for a Tuesday rematch with UCF. First pitch is scheduled 6:30 pm. C-USA play resumes next Friday at the FAU Baseball Stadium against UAB.
