Does it feel like every day there’s another obstacle in your way?
Life doesn’t throw us anything predictable, does it? We couldn’t have predicted what we are experiencing right now. Fear can steal away our present if we let it.
Can you think of a time when something unexpected happened and it felt like there was no solution?
How can we get around those barriers and still move forward to achieve our goals?
What would it mean for you if these blockages that have been holding you back were simply providing detours to bigger and better opportunities?
For a long time, I believed no matter how hard I worked at anything I always came up against a mountain that I just couldn’t seem to get around. When I thought I might have finally found my way around that mountain, I found myself standing at a cliff with nowhere to go. At least, it felt that way.
Was this true? Was there no way to get around the mountain or a way to get off the cliff’s edge safely?
There can always be the possibility of something new and different when we decide to view obstacles as opportunities.
Amy Purdy, at age 19, contracted Neisseria meningitidis, a form of bacterial meningitis that practically shut down her entire body. Against the odds, she survived but lost her legs from the knees down. In spite of all the challenges she would need to overcome, she became a Paralympic snowboarder bronze medalist and fulfilled a dream. I had the privilege of hearing her tell her story recently and it touched my heart.
“Obstacles do only 1 of 2 things: Stop us in our tracks or force us to be creative. Sometimes our detours lead us to our destiny.” (Amy Purdy, 2020)
Amy didn’t let the obstacle of losing her legs stop her from achieving her dream to be an Olympic snowboarder and found a way to make her dream come true. She asked herself, ‘if my life was a book, how would I want it to end’? Her story and strength are truly an inspiration and her determination to make many more dreams come true continues.
If your life was a book, how would YOU want the book to end?
What might be different for you if you choose to be creative by turning an obstacle into an opportunity?
