Detroit Grand Prix Unveils Student-Designed Murals to be Featured Trackside on Race Weekend

Boys & Girls Clubs of Southeastern Michigan Students Reveal Creative Designs Reflecting Detroit to be Displayed Trackside During Event Weekend

DETROIT, Mich. (May 1, 2024) – Strengthening its connection with neighborhoods across Detroit through its Community Partnership program, the Chevrolet Detroit Grand Prix presented by Lear today unveiled murals created by young students from the Boys & Girls Clubs of Southeastern Michigan that will be proudly displayed trackside during the Grand Prix, May 31-June 2, on the Streets of Downtown Detroit.

Utilizing advanced digital technology, students ranging in age from 12 to 16, created the unique mural designs that honor the diverse neighborhoods in Detroit. All eight murals capture the spirit of the Motor City while reinforcing the strong connection the Grand Prix has with the community. With the support of Grand Prix Community Partners including American Axle & Manufacturing, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan, Delta Air Lines, Delta Dental, DTE Foundation, Henry Ford Health, Huntington Bank, Lear Corporation and PNC Bank, the Grand Prix provides a platform for the students’ artwork to shine at one of Detroit’s most popular annual summertime festivals.

Measuring 24 feet long and three feet high, each of the murals will be placed on the barrier walls surrounding the Downtown Detroit race circuit, in front of the viewing platforms on Jefferson Avenue that will be open and accessible to fans completely free of charge all weekend long at the Grand Prix.

“Thanks to our dedicated Community Partners, these talented and creative young students at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Southeastern Michigan can take pride in what they’ve created and the opportunity to share their art with everyone at this year’s Grand Prix,” said Michael Montri, President of the Chevrolet Detroit Grand Prix presented by Lear. “We are so excited to see these unique designs come to life as the Grand Prix shares the vision and character of the communities across Detroit with our fans, as well as those watching the race broadcast all over the world.”

The murals were created by students in the Boys & Girls Clubs of Southeastern Michigan (BGCSM) Digital Design Club. The young artists learned about the history of the Chevrolet Detroit Grand Prix presented by Lear, dating back to 1982 and the event’s heritage on the Streets of Downtown Detroit. Under the tutelage of program partner and artist Asia Davis, the students received digital art instruction using Adobe Illustrator to produce their designs. After working on their art for more than six weeks, the BGCSM students submitted their final mural designs to the Chevrolet Detroit Grand Prix presented by Lear Advisory Committee. The committee then selected the eight winning mural designs that will be displayed trackside during Grand Prix weekend.

On Wednesday, Team Penske driver and the most recent NTT INDYCAR SERIES race winner, Scott McLaughlin, helped the students unveil the winning mural designs. College for Creative Studies (CCS) senior Alison Slackta was also on hand to unveil the Official 2024 Detroit Grand Prix commemorative poster. Slackta won the annual Grand Prix Poster Design Competition, featuring students at CCS. Her colorful winning design honors the street art culture in Detroit while incorporating some of the most identifiable monuments on the downtown streets and the high-tech cars that will compete in the Motor City on race weekend. The 2024 commemorative poster will be available for purchase online at https://detroitgp.com/ on Wednesday afternoon, in advance of the Chevrolet Detroit Grand Prix presented by Lear, May 31-June 2.

The 34th Grand Prix event in the City’s history will return to the 1.7-mile, nine-turn Streets of Downtown Detroit circuit that runs along the award-winning Detroit Riverwalk, May 31-June 2, 2024. With new viewing options and entertainment packages, fans can purchase tickets at www.DetroitGP.com/Tickets or through the event’s Ticket Hotline at 866-464-PRIX (7749).
