BOCA RATON, Fla. – The preseason accolades keep coming for junior guard Johnell Davis of the Florida Atlantic University men’s basketball team, who was one of 20 players named to the 2024 Jerry West Award Watch List as announced by the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame on Tuesday afternoon.
The Jerry West Award, named after legendary hall-of-famer Jerry West, is awarded annually in to the top shooting guard in Division I.
Fans will be able to play a part in helping Davis land on top. Fan Voting, presented by Dell Technologies, opens up on Friday, Oct. 27 and will be a deciding factor when the list is narrowed down to 10 in January and five in February. A winner will then be selected in March from the five finalists by West and the Hall of Fame’s Selection Committee.
Davis adds another preseason honor in addition to being named to the American Athletic Conference Preseason All-Conference First Team as well as being named the conference’s Preseason Player of the Year along with teammate Alijah Martin.
It is well deserved following a breakout 2022-23 season that saw him lead the Final Four bound Owls in scoring with 13.8 points per game and adding 1.8 steals per game.
Davis further established himself in the 2023 NCAA Tournament, most notably in the Round of 32 victory against Farleigh Dickinson where he recorded a stat line of 29 points, 12 rebounds, five assists, and five steals, the first player in tournament history to log a 25+, 10+, 5+, 5+ game.
