Coral Springs city leaders, along with personnel from the Coral Springs-Parkland Fire Department, held a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony for the new Russell “Russ” Donovan Fire Station #64 (600 Ramblewood Drive) on Friday, October 20 at 10 a.m.
The new fire station is state-of-the-art and contains approximately 8,000 square feet in floor area. It is highlighted by three bays and automatic, bi-fold doors. In addition, it provides accommodations for full-time firefighters with dormitory living facilities, fully equipped working areas, and administrative offices.
Named for former Coral Springs Volunteer Fire Chief, Russell “Russ” Donovan, the station, once known as Fire Station 2, opened in 1977 to protect the southeast edge of Coral Springs. The original station was run by Donovan, and the naming in his honor pays homage to his contributions to the city.
The ceremony was highlighted with a presentation to Donovan and his wife, who were in attendance, where they received a commemorative plaque to keep. Public safety personnel also symbolically pulled the first fire truck into the new bay and offered tours of the station. City leaders also spoke, including City Manager Frank Babinec, Fire Chief Michael McNally, and Mayor Scott Brook who expressed his appreciation for the new facility.
“No one wants to experience an emergency, but when it happens, our community can rest easy knowing that the responders who operate out of this facility are equipped with the best possible tools to save lives,” Brook said.
