Charlotte, Florida Atlantic Earn Bids Into The 2024 NCAA Division I Softball Championship

IRVING, Texas – The Charlotte 49ers and Florida Atlantic Owls softball teams will represent the American Athletic Conference in the 2024 NCAA Softball Regionals as both heard their names called during the NCAA Selection Show on Sunday.

Charlotte will travel to Athens, Georgia to take on Liberty in the NCAA Charlotte Regional on May 17. Florida Atlantic will take on South Alabama in the NCAA Gainesville Regional on May 17. Each of the 16 NCAA Regional sites feature four teams competing in a double-elimination tournament, with the top-16 advancing to best 2-out-3 series at the highest remaining seeds in the NCAA Super Regionals. The final eight teams will qualify for the 2024 Women’s College World Series in Oklahoma City.

Teams from The American have now reached the NCAA Regional round a combined 26 times since the conference was reconstituted prior to the 2014 season. The 2024 NCAA Championship marks the eighth time in ten seasons that multiple American teams have earned a bid to NCAA Regionals. American squads are 34-48 in previous NCAA tournament appearances.

Charlotte (38-16) is headed to NCAA Regionals in back-to-back seasons, earning The American’s automatic bid after winning the programs first conference tournament championship. After earning a share of the regular season championship, Charlotte defeated Wichita State 10-1 in The American Championship to claim the tournament championship, as well. The 49ers earned their first NCAA Regional berth a season ago, winning two games against Campbell, but was eliminated by host Duke.

Florida Atlantic (41-14) will make its 12th NCAA Regional appearance in program history and first since 2016. Led by The American Coaching Staff of the Year, head coach Jordan Clark guided the Owls to a share of The American regular season championship in the first year in the league, finishing the season with a 21-6 conference record before falling to Wichita State in the semifinals of the 2024 American Softball Championship. Florida Atlantic is 17-20 all-time in the NCAA Regionals.
