FORT WORTH, Texas – No. 12 seed Charlotte used a strong third quarter to defeat No. 13 seed Florida Atlantic, 55-51, in the first round of the 2025 American Women’s Basketball Championship on Saturday afternoon, March 8, at the Super Pit in Denton, Texas.
With the win, Charlotte (10-20) advances to the second round and will play No. 5 seed Tulsa at 3 p.m. ET/2 p.m. CT on ESPN+ at Dickies Arena in Fort Worth, Texas. Florida Atlantic concludes the season at 11-21.
The Owls held the 49ers to 2-of-9 shooting (22.2 percent) in the first quarter and led 9-4. Florida Atlantic held a 20-15 lead at halftime before Charlotte outscored the Owls, 21-11, to take a 36-31 lead after three quarters.
Charlotte led by 10 at 45-35 with 4:46 remaining after a 3-pointer by Alexis Andrews, but the Owls cut the lead to two with 59 seconds left on a three by Ta’Ziah Jenks. Charlotte’s Jordan Peete answered with her first field goal of the day, a 3-pointer, with 33 seconds left to push the lead back to five and the Owls would never get closer than three the rest of the game.
Keanna Rembert led the 49ers with 16 points and six rebounds, with 14 points after halftime. Hayleigh Breland added 12 points.
Moore led the Owls with 13 points and six rebounds.
