CHICAGO – Zakyia Weathersby scored a game-high 26 points in UAB’s 81-50 victory over Chicago State on Saturday afternoon.
Margaret Whitley added 11 and Maria Roters scored 10 for the Blazers, who start out 2-0 for the second consecutive year.
After falling behind 8-4 in the 1st quarter, UAB used an 11-4 run to close things out. Caitlynn Daniels’ driving layup as the horn sounded put the Blazers ahead 17-12.
UAB kept the momentum going in the 2nd quarter. They started off by going on a 14-4 run to extend its lead to 31-16. Claudia Armato’s turnaround jumper closed out the scoring for the Blazers giving them a 35-25 advantage heading into halftime.
A 3-pointer by Whitley at 4:10 of the 3rd quarter gave UAB its first 20+ point lead of the game when her basket made the score 52-31.
The UAB lead would get a high as 33 points after an Emily Klaczek layup made the score 79-46 with 2:32 remaining in the game.
“I thought there were a lot of positives from today’s game,” said head coach Randy Norton. “Starting on the defensive side, our goal was to hold them under 55 points and we did that. On the offensive side, we did a great job playing inside-out.”
UAB returns home on Nov. 19 against Mississippi Valley State. Note the new start time against MVSU is now 11 a.m.
