BOCA RATON, Fla. – Florida Atlantic baseball used another dominant performance from the pitching staff to hold off Miami by a 2-1 final on Tuesday night. Six FAU pitchers combined to hold the Hurricanes to four hits.

THE BEGINNING

Miami drew first blood in the top of the first after an error, a swinging bunt/infield single, and two hit batters. Starter Zach Kilby would settle in and, after two strikeouts, escaped the inning without further damage.

THE TURNING POINT

The Owls’ offense had several chances to tie or take the lead. Opportunities with multiple runners on base in the second, third, fourth, and sixth innings amounted to nothing on the scoreboard.

Finally, in the seventh, Jake Duer led off with a double. Nick Romano and Jake Millan drew walks to load the bases, and Ayden Garcia followed suit with a walk of his own to force across the tying run. Later, with two outs, Brando Leroux also walked to bring in the go-ahead run.

THE FINISH

Tasked with holding a lead, the FAU bullpen slammed the door in the final two innings. MJ Bollinger pitched a clean eighth and got the first out of the ninth. With a runner on, Kide Adetuyi was brought in to face a lefty whom he retired. Braden Ostrander entered for the final out. Romano made a highlight-reel backhanded stop on a hot shot to third base and delivered a throw across the diamond to end the game.

THE BATS

  • The Owls out-hit Miami 7-4
  • Duer, Martinez, and Leroux each finished with two hits apiece
  • Kyle Boylston had the Owls’ other hit and stole a base

THE ARMS

  • Kilby allowed one hit and one unearned run in four innings in his first start as an Owl
  • Steven Andrews pitched the fifth and sixth innings and struck out one
  • Max Martzolf handled a clean seventh and was credited with the win
  • Bollinger struck out two, including UM’s impressive sophomore slugger Daniel Cuvet, to strand a runner in the eighth
