BOCA RATON, Fla. – Florida Atlantic baseball limited Florida Gulf Coast to five hits on Tuesday night in a 2-0 shutout. Sophomore Dylan LaPointe’s two-run homer in the seventh inning was the difference for the Owls, who improved to 32-16 while FGCU dropped to 21-26.
THE BEGINNING
Freshman Nick Wimberly made the start for the second consecutive Tuesday and gave the Owls another solid outing on the mound. Wimberly allowed two hits and struck out four in three innings. Zach Kilby and Joey Abbazia followed out of the bullpen and conceded one hit each.
TURNING POINT
After six scoreless frames, the FAU offense broke the stalemate in the bottom of the seventh inning. Emilio Gonzalez worked an 11-pitch, two-out walk to give LaPointe an opportunity. On a 1-1 pitch, the sophomore connected to straightaway center for his fifth home run of the season.
THE FINISH
Steven Andrews retired the side in order in the eighth and worked around a two-out single in the ninth to earn the save and finish off the Owls’ second shutout of the season. The Owls now lead the season series two games to one, with one final meeting against the Eagles next Tuesday afternoon.
THE BATS
LaPointe finished with two of the Owls’ four hits.
John Martinez and Joey Slattery each singled.
The Owls nearly took the lead in the second inning, but Nick Romano was tagged out at home trying to score on Slattery’s base hit.
THE ARMS
Kilby struck out three in 2.1 innings.
Abbazia was credited with the win after entering with one on and one out in the sixth – the freshman induced a 5-3 double play ball to escape the Eagles’ best scoring opportunity of the night.
Andrews struck out four of the seven batters he faced to record his first save of the season.
