American Conference Volleyball Release -September 4

THREE AMERICAN TEAMS START HOT

Three American teams came out of opening weekend unscathed. East Carolina, Memphis and North Texas all finished the first weekend of play with a 3-0 record.

The Pirates traveled to Hampton, Virginia and Defeated Florida A&M, Maryland Eastern Shore and Hampton all in straight sets. Memphis hosted a tournament and after taking down USC Upstate in five sets, the Tigers defeated Northwestern State and Tennessee State in straight sets to finish the weekend.  The Mean Green traveled to Commerce, Texas and defeated Little Rock and Providence in four sets before taking down host East Texas A&M in straight sets for their final match.

MAAS IN TOP 5

Redshirt junior libero Gabi Maas of Wichita State enters the second weekend in play averaging the 5th most digs per set in the nation at 5.88. Her efforts in opening weekend earned her American Defensive Player of the Week honors.  The Shockers will travel to Provo, Utah to play in the BYU Nike Invitational this weekend.

RANKED OPPONENTS ON THE SCHEDULE

A handful of ranked match ups will take place this weekend in tournament action.  On Friday, Tulsa will play against Oklahoma, South Florida will take on Florida State and North Texas will play at Miami. All three teams are receiving votes.  Wichita State will play against No. 18 BYU on Friday, while Rice travels to Waco on Sunday to take on No. 20 Baylor.
