FERNANDEZ NAMED 2024 USA BASKETBALL WOMEN’S U18 NATIONAL TEAM ASSISTANT COACH
USA Basketball has selected South Florida women’s basketball Head Coach Jose Fernandez as an assistant coach for the 2024 USA Basketball Women’s U18 National Team. Fernandez will make his assistant coaching debut for USA Basketball after serving as a court coach in 2018 for the U18 National Team Trials.
LAWRENCE NAMED TO NCAA STARTING FIVE
American Player of the Week Dazia Lawrence was named to the NCAA Starting Five this week, which recognizes the top five performances in the nation. Lawrence led the 49ers to a pair of wins at North Texas and at home against Wichita State. She averaged 24 points, 4.5 assists and five rebounds. Lawrence had a high of 26 points in the road win over the Mean Green before adding 22 points and eight assists in the home win over the Shockers.
FIRST PLACE UP FOR GRABS
Following Tulsa’s win over Temple on Wednesday night, there is now a three-way tie at first place between the Golden Hurricane, the Owls and North Texas. With just two games remaining, no team will be able to clinch the number one seed for the conference tournament until the final day of games.
MCNEAL REACHES STEALS MILESTONE
East Carolina graduate guard Danae McNeal has made a career on the defensive side of the ball, becoming one of the best defenders in American Athletic Conference history. She became the 14th player in conference history to reach 200 career steals and currently has 206 steals in her career. Over her three-year career at East Carolina, she is averaging 2.2 steals per game, including a career-high 2.9 steals per game this season.
