American Athletic Conference Men’s Soccer Release – September 14

Conference Play Begins

League play begins this weekend in The American with South Florida beginning on a bye.  Memphis will travel to SMU on Friday for the first game. On Saturday, Temple will travel to defending American champion FIU, Tulsa will travel to Florida Atlantic and Charlotte will travel to UAB.

Ranked Wins Across The American

South Florida and SMU both took care of ranked opponents last week.  The Bulls picked up their first win of the season with a 1-0 shutout over then 15th-ranked Indiana in Tampa, while SMU defeated then No. 25 Oral Roberts 1-0 in Dallas.

Johnson Shutting Out Opponents

SMU senior goalkeeper is tied for the nation’s lead and leads The American in shutouts.  In his six games in the goal, Johnson has four shutouts, including each of the last three matches.  He helped the Mustangs pick up a win over No. 25 Oral Roberts, collecting six saves in the 1-0 clean sheet victory.

American in the Rankings

SMU continues to climb the national rankings in both the United Soccer Coaches Poll and Top Drawer Soccer Poll, ranking 16th and 9th, respectively.  FIU and Memphis are both receiving votes in the United Soccer Coaches Poll, marking the first time this season that Memphis has been receiving votes.

Top Offenses Face Off

The top two American offenses will face off to open the season as (RV) Memphis travels to No. 16 SMU. Through six games, both teams have scored 11 goals on the year. SMU holds a 5-1 record on the year, while Memphis is 4-0-2 entering conference play. Kickoff is at 7 p.m. ET on ESPN+ on Friday.
