MEMPHIS WINS CHAMPIONSHIP

Memphis captured the 2025 American Men’s Basketball Championship with an 84-72 win over UAB on March 16 at Dickies Arena in Fort Worth, Texas.

IN THE RANKINGS

Memphis is ranked No. 16 in both the AP Top 25 and the USA Today Coaches Poll.

MEMPHIS SELECTED AS A NO. 5 SEED

American regular-season and tournament champion Memphis has been selected as a No. 5 seed in the West Region for the 2025 NCAA Championship. The Tigers, who have made the NCAA tournament three out of the last four years, will face No. 12 seed Colorado State in Seattle, Washington, on Friday, March 21 at 2 p.m. Eastern on TBS.

HAGGERTY NAMED MOST OUTSTANDING PLAYER

Memphis’ PJ Haggerty was named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player after leading the Tigers with 27.7 points per game.

He scored 42 points in a quarterfinal win over Wichita State, matching the Championship’s single-game record. His 16 field goals against the Shockers broke the single-game record for The American in any game. In addition, he became the first player in Championship history to be perfect from the line in a game with 10 or more attempts, going 14-for-14 from the charity stripe.

LENDEBORG’S MONSTER GAME

Against East Carolina in the quarterfinals, UAB’s Yaxel Lendeborg produced the American Championship’s first 20-20 game. The senior scored 30 points and grabbed 20 rebounds while also recording eight assists, five steals and four blocks with no turnovers. Lendeborg went on to set the Championship record for rebounds in a tournament with 50 in three games, breaking his own previous record of 41, set at the 2024 Championship.

REWRITING THE RECORD BOOKS

With eight field goals in the American Championship final against UAB on March 16, Memphis’ PJ Haggerty has set a new conference single-season record for made field goals with 241, breaking DeAndre Williams’ mark of 239 from 2022-23 with Memphis.

Haggerty is three points shy of Kendric Davis’ conference single-season record of 744 points (2022-23 with Memphis) and is 16 free throws shy of his own single-season record of 237, set last season with Tulsa.

UAB’s Yaxel Lendeborg re-broke The American’s single-season rebounding record in the Championship final and now has 375 for the season, five more than he had in 2023-24 (370).
