Sunday’s loss against the Green Bay Packers, 23-20 marked the end of another disappointing season for the Detroit Lions. Their record of 3-12-1 has granted them with the 3rd overall pick and the opportunity to improve mightily in this year’s NFL Draft. Although the mystery of who they should select remains, a few candidates have emerged from the depths of college football that they should consider. They are:
Chase Young, 20, DE, Ohio State: According to, Dan Schmelzer of nflmocks.com says, “Chase Young is an exciting EDGE prospect who is inarguably one of the most talented players of the 2020 NFL draft class.” “He shows good overall size and length on the outside, with the impressive combination of strength and athleticism that makes him a fit for any defensive scheme.” “Young is best suited to be a 4-3 defensive end at the next level but certainly has the ability to rush the passer from the edge for a 3-4 team.”
Jeff Okudah, 20, CB, Ohio State: According to, walterfootball.com says, “Okudah is a well-rounded prospect who does everything well.” “He is very good at preventing separation because he can vertically stay with speed wideouts and run the routes with receivers.” “Okudah also has the size and physicality to match up with big wideouts but has the speed to defend the vertical threats.” “With his aggressive and physical style of play, Okudah sits on routes and really challenges receivers to run by him.”
Andrew Thomas, 20, OT, Georgia: According to, Bryan Perez of withthefirstpick.com says, “Thomas is a reliable pass protector who has strong enough base to handle power players and quick enough feet to handle speed on the edge.” “He’ll need more work with his punch, however, as he often uncoils too high and doesn’t get a great fit on the defender’s chest.” “This is something that will improve over time, however.” “His hands are naturally heavy and he creates a good jolt when his technique is sound.”
Whoever Detroit drafts, their top priority needs to be on the defensive side of the ball. They rank 26th in the NFL in defense and 28th in sacks per game at 1.8. Adding a talent like Chase Young would be a major upgrade. He would give them a boost in the sacks department and more. As for Okudah, he would make a great pairing with Pro-Bowl corner Darius Slay. Both of them possess great ball skills and are lockdown corners. Finally, adding an offensive lineman like Andrew Thomas wouldn’t hurt if you’re looking to protect franchise QB Matthew Stafford and to add depth.
