JACKSONVILLE – As part of the Jaguars’ Literacy Locker Room initiative, WR Laviska Shenault Jr. visited students at John Love Elementary on Monday, Jan. 24 and Greenfield Elementary on Tuesday, Jan. 25 to read books and share his passion for literacy and the importance of reading.
In celebration of the Florida Department of Education’s Celebrate Literacy Week, Florida!, Shenault spent time with 500-plus students ages 3-11 from the two schools reading books and speaking about the importance of reading and literacy, especially at a young age. Celebrate Literacy Week, Florida!, which runs from January 24-28, raises awareness about the importance of reading and aims to inspire Florida’s students and families to make reading part of their daily routines.
Shenault read several books to the children, including “Baby Goes to Market” and “All Are Welcome.”
“It was super fun to be with these kids and see their energy,” Shenault said. “With me being older, I want them to know how important it is to have that skill of reading in your life. It is important in whatever career you want to pursue.”
Literacy Locker Room was originally created in 2021 by the Jaguars Foundation and promotes the importance of literacy to local youth. The Jaguars plan to continue the initiative with former and current players visiting local schools and spending time reading to kids, discussing the impact of literacy on their lives and gifting books to schools and classrooms around the First Coast.
