BOCA RATON, Fla. – On the cusp of the 2021 Florida Atlantic University football season, the 21st season of the fledgling program’s existence, FAU head coach Willie Taggart introduced “Single-Digit Strong” to the Owls and emphasized coming to work each and every day with the idea of getting one percent better each of those days. Prior to the 2021 camp, each of the Owls were issued a light blue button-down shirt with their name on a patch above the breast pocket. The thought is this is a “working man’s shirt” and that the team is going to work. The Owls did just that for the next 15-plus days. They came to work, and for several, that meant more than getting one percent better. It meant they were there to prove they deserved to wear a single-digit jersey. The camp roster was announced with no players issued a practice jersey with a number less than 10. For some, the jersey’s they were issued were “just plain evil;” for others it was a challenge to show they deserved to wear the number and those set out to earn the number. The first to move into a single digit number was third-year sophomore Larry McCammon III, who wore No. 3 his first two seasons and donned No. 32 throughout camp. McCammon III once again sported No. 3 in Saturday night’s scrimmage. Coach Taggart issued more single digits on Sunday and Monday, and will announce more throughout this week. Single-Digit Honorees To this point (more will be issued): 0 DL Jaylen Joyner 1 LB Antarrius Moultrie 2 LB Akileis Leroy 3 RB Larry McCammon III 3 LB Eddie Williams 4 S Teja Young 5 RB Johnny Ford 5 LB Ahman Ross 6 QB Nick Tronti 7 LB Chase Lasater 8 DL Evan Anderson 9 LB Caliph Brice Additionally, punter Matt Hayball has switched from No. 42 to No. 15.
